Community News: Tangier Island Celebrates Pastor Crockett’s Birthday; Parks to Teach CPR Classes

Duane Crockett celebrated his birthday Friday – so please wish him a happy birthday.

Crockett is a popular teacher at Tangier Combined School, also an Elder at New Testament Church.

On that note, it is not uncommon to see Crockett walking around the island’s “loop” with other teachers in the evenings and/or to see him carrying a Bible – headed to church to deliver a sermon. Enlightened about the ways of the Lord, here’s this faith based inspirational quote about life on Tangier from Crockett that comes from Earl Swift’s book.

“We are here until God says otherwise. I know the Lord works in some ways where things have to get to the point where we don’t know what to do – and right then, we find out that the Lord has everything under control.”

In other news, Christopher Parks, who grew up in Tangier, lucky man, also TCS Class of 1994, reached out to me – he said the island used to have a newsletter called “The Fisher” – a great name for a publication. Parks suggested that our website have a section called “days gone by” and perhaps have an insert of articles from The Fisher. That’s a good idea – If someone can send/email me copies of that newsletter, I’ll be happy to include that information on the website.

On another note, Parks will teach a Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers CPR class at 5 p.m. Friday, March 28 at Tangier Combined School and a First Aid, CPR & AED class at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29 at the school.

Reminder – important alert – the Town Hall’s email address has changed to townoffice@tangiervirginia.org
Folks, if you have any questions or concerns, send an email to townoffice@tangiervirginia.org

On that note, if you have news or photos about life in Tangier, send them mileslayton1969@gmail.com or reach out to me via Facebook. Speaking of Town Hall, when the minutes to Tuesday’s Town Council meeting are ready, those will be posted to the website.

Today’s history note was inspired by the name Crockett:

• The first recorded settlement on Tangier Island was in 1778.

• The first permanent Anglo-American settler was John Crockett.

• Many of the island’s inhabitants have the surname Crockett.

Last note, if you have news about Tangier, reach out to me at mileslayton1969@gmail.com or via Facebook.

  1. I’m unable to be out and about anymore and I love that I can be informed about the island’s affairs. I so look forward to the updates and love the pictures of all the island things that I so miss.
