Tangier Island Welcomes New Council Members

Accomack County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Bobby Taylor and his wife Talia traveled to Tangier Island to swear in the Town’s new council members on Thursday, December 26.

New council members – Kelly Wheatley, Anna Parks, Elizabeth Thomas, Sharon Haynie, Tommy Eskridge and Tracy Pruitt – will serve a two-year term that commences Jan. 1, 2025 and ends Dec. 31, 2026.  

“We are ready to serve the people of Tangier to the best of our ability,” Haynie said.  

Re-elected to a new term as mayor, James “Ooker” Eskridge will be sworn in Friday at the Accomack County Clerk of Court’s Office.

Named after the African city in eastern Morocco by Captain John Smith in the 1600s, Tangier Island (Virginia) has a rich history. Nestled in the Chesapeake Bay, around 400 people are proud to call Tangier their home.
