Tangier, Virginia, Captain Mark Haynie retires
Captain Mark Haynie, a 71-year-old native of Tangier Island, retires after 15 years of ferrying tourists between Tangier and Crisfield, Maryland. Celebrated by town residents, Mayor James Eskridge praised his dedication and emergency service. Haynie plans to continue his passion for watersports in retirement, focusing on fishing and crabbing.
Projects are ‘keystone’ to support the rejuvenation and sustainability of Tangier Island
Leo Radkowski from A and N Electric Cooperative presented planned infrastructure improvements for Tangier Island, funded by a $2.3 million Virginia DEQ grant. This includes replacing aging fuel storage tanks, enhancing wastewater treatment, and installing floodgates to mitigate flooding. While funding constraints may limit some projects, further grants are being pursued to address shortfalls.
