Attention Tangier Island Residents — The water testing results have been received by the town and the “Boil Water” order will continue into next week. Last week, one of our water samples returned a positive result for both E. Coli and Coliform. The new samples that were collected and tested on Thursday, July 10th, returned a positive result for Coliform but was negative for E. Coli. All upstream and downstream samples were negative for both E. Coli and Coliform. Coliform is a common organism that can be found in the environment via both soil and water. Our wastewater operator seems to think the source of the coliform is located in the vault, where the samples are collected and not in the actual water source itself as the vault site shows advanced levels of deterioration due to rust and environmental deterioration. Out of an abundance of caution, due to the serious nature of a positive test sample, we must continue to advise the residents of Tangier to continue to boil your water until our next set of samples are collected early next week and return negative results. Over the weekend, our wastewater operator will be coming over and performing a chlorination of the affected well system. We will provide another update next week once we receive the next set of testing results back from the lab. Thank you for your cooperation!
