The below minutes were unanimously voted APPROVED at the May 23rd meeting. These are the minutes from a short meeting on May 16 at Town Hall to nominate Normand St-Pierre as a member of the Town Council. Read Normand’s comments below — they speak volumes about his character. Congrats, Normand! Normand was officially approved Friday, May 23, as a member of the Town Council. Thanks, Barb Baechtel, for preparing the minutes for publication.

• Beth Thomas, Vice Mayor
• Tommy Eskridge
• Anna Parks
• Tracy Pruitt

Council Nominee: Normand St. Pierre
Mayor James “Ooker” Eskridge.
Five members of the Tangier community were in attendance.
Call to Order:
Vice Mayor Beth Thomas called the meeting to order at 6:05 pm.
Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance
The opening invocation was given by Mayor James Eskridge.
Opening Statement:
Beth Thomas explained that the reason for the special session was to nominate Normand St-Pierre to fill the vacant spot on the Council left by Sharon Haynie’s resignation in April. The formal vote to confirm Mr. St.
Pierre’s nomination will be held at the regularly scheduled monthly Council meeting on Friday, May 23rd. She
went on to thank Sharon for her diligent service to the Town, working tirelessly, with few resources, to help
make the Town fiscally responsible. She opened the floor to any questions from the community for Normand St-Pierre.
Public comments:
Normand St. Pierre stated that he was happy to help, but hoped to assist without it becoming a full-time
career. He has some experience that he feels would benefit the Town, but recognizes his place as a non-native,
and encouraged the Council and community to correct him when he got things wrong, as he has no intention of
dictating how the Islanders should live their lives.
Mayor Eskridge assured Normand that his input and his experience were valued.
Normand St. Pierre went on to caution the Council against hostile discourse between members. He stated that
Tangier was like a very close family, and that disagreements could easily become heated and unproductive.
Nina Pruitt said that she had high hopes for Mr. St. Pierre’s appointment and was looking forward to great
things.
The next public meeting will be held on Friday, May 23rd. Since there was no further business, the meeting
was adjourned by Beth Thomas at 6:20 p.m.
