Meet Barbara Marshall: 31 years of teaching at TCS — Lucky teacher!

Barbara Marshall is in her 31st year of teaching at Tangier Combined School, teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. She has a passion for working with children, enabling her to make a meaningful difference in their lives by providing knowledge and fostering a love for learning.

Barbara Marshall is one great teacher! LOVE the Trump dollars! On that note, this editor is writing a letter to President Trump asking for his help to get a seawall for the eastern side of the Island.

Marshall is a mother of four. Her daughter Ravan resides in California with her four children: Mason, Kayden, Colton, and Nolan. Jacqueline lives in Richmond with her two sons, Grayson and Isaac. Chelsea also resides in Richmond, while her son Vance lives on Tangier with her.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Marshall serves as the VBS director, manages the church sound system, and records messages for those who are unable to attend church services. This year her class embarked on an inspiring project to create and publish a class book, which has significantly enhanced her students’ confidence in their writing abilities.

TCS Alumnus giving back to school
Jenny Dise graduated from Tangier Combined School in 2000. Shortly after, she married the love of her life, Dan, who makes his living as a commercial fisherman. She has two children, Cassie (19) is a sophomore at JMU, and Daniel (13) is in the 7th grade. After being a stay-at-home mom for many years, Dise started substituting at TCS and just this fall began working as an instructional assistant. Dise works with all grade levels and enjoys the diversity during the school day. One minute she may be helping a preschool student identify shapes and the next she is helping middle school students solve equations. Dise is an active member of the New Testament Church. She is a Sunday school teacher for 4-5 year olds and helps out during Vacation Bible School. In the summer months, she can be found at her husband’s crab shanty. A few of Dise’s favorite things include antiquing, a good snowstorm, and spending time with her family.

True blue TCS Class of 2000, Jenny Dise is working as an instructional assistant and serving her community.

Stand up for your rights!
Dustin Tyler and Daniel Dise are 7th-grade students in Mr. Duane Crockett’s Social Studies class. They have been studying the creation of labor unions and how workers stand up to demand more rights. Mr. Crockett ensures that his lessons are authentic and meaningful so that his students will remember the topics of discussion.

Dustin and Daniel — this editor understands your message, agrees completely!

Hi-Y Club News
TCS Hi-Y club recently held a Bake Sale to raise money for the traveling expenses needed to attend the MGA (Modern General Assembly). Before attending MGA, students decide on a bill, write it, and prepare to debate it. While in Richmond, students will present their bill, debate, and defend it. They will also hear bills presented by other participating schools and vote on whether or not to pass them.

100 Days Smarter
Weston Pruitt and his classmates celebrated the 100th day of school by making a 100-dollar bill with their picture on it.

Elementary competition
In Art class, Melissa Parks had an amazing idea for her elementary students. Each student created their own Valentine’s box. TCS staff members and high school students voted on their favorite box. The winner, Rahab Charnock (5th grade), won a special prize. She created a vanity that included a mirror, drawer, and even makeup. It has been so exciting to witness the creativity in our young artists.
